Chickens!

We got four chicks in February. I don't have any little chick pictures however because our camera died shortly after their arrival. Here they are a couple weeks old-looking funny as their feathers come in. It seems that Jacob and I always need a winter project-something to work on while we are cooped up during the final weeks of winter. So this year we built a coop during naptimes. Nothing to brag about-we are definitely not carpenters but it's for chickens right?! Besides, as one of our friends pointed out, chickens wouldn't feel at home in something perfectly square. It wouldn't be natural. Anyway, it will keep them safe and dry and they'll have plenty of room to dig. Since we are only going to keep them for the summer, I didn't have to worry about warmth--just ventilation. I only planned it for 3 hens. We guessed that at least one of them would be a rooster. I can't tell yet but have bets that the leghorned white is not going to stay-he has attitude. Jacob has named him fiesty. The chicks have been enjoying the coop on warm days. We need more of those as they are getting to big for their tub in the garage. When we let them out in the yard to scratch around, "Shepherd" Jacob is always close by to "protect" them.

The coop looks great! So why only through the summer? So fun to see your updates!

It's just too cold in winter. I'm not willing to trudge through the snow to take care of sick chickens.
